Intro
You know those days you wake up in a bad mood, not enough energy or your energy is off?
You might wake up dreading the day until after your first cup of coffee or your anxiety is nagging at you. Maybe it is a day that you have to talk yourself out of staying in bed.
When you ground, you cleanse your yucky energy, bringing positive energy, healing energy in. You have enough energy to get the job done in a positive way.
That is what we mean when we ask if you grounded today. You can feel better. You are not helpless, try it. Just doing something positive for yourself gets you out of some moods.
Consider it similar to plugging in your phone. Sure, your phone can work for awhile without being plugged in and recharging, but your battery will run low.
What are the easiest ways to ground?
Grounding means getting back into your body, all the way and charging your energy. What do you do on a regular basis to get in your body? Do those things first and see if it clicks for you.
Lift weights? Weighted blanket? Go running? Dig in the garden? Play with your kids? Play your music? Each of those things works well, for some people. It is not a panacea. Some people find no change. So take an inventory of what works for you. Make a list and put it somewhere you can see it daily. Those days that you need the boost, try the usuals. The others days, you may need a plan b or c.

Energy is about vibrations. Vibrations in nature are different. Go be in nature.
If you are at work and work is not tied to the natural world, try to manipulate energy with sound. Tuning forks, toning or music at work…
Color is another vibration. Green absolutely grounds some people I know, whereas red is what others need. Find your color, wear it, have it in the art around you. Try each of the colors of the rainbow and then branch out.
I first learned to ground by “Becoming an oak tree,” They were very specific and I have found that almost any tree works. Your energy follows intention, so set your intention to root yourself deep into the earth. Bring up energy through your legs. Discharge yucky energy through your legs. Some people imagine a circuit within themselves. Up the one leg and down the other, like a loop. Others do a group, a circle and circulate the energy through the group.
Leaning against a tree might work. Hugging a tree, climbing a tree, walking in the forest. You get the idea- they are rooted and their roots often intermix. Walking in nature grounds most of us. Especially alone and barefoot for some of us. Others prefer walking with a friend and wearing hiking boots. Find what works for you, but promise me you won’t stop experimenting until you figure it out. It is too important.
Grounding after a trauma or a disorienting event can be done quickly and efficiently by naming things you experience with all five senses. I see these three things, I hear these things, I smell these, I am sitting in a chair… Associate back with your body and experience the world through the senses and watch how much easier it is to ground.
I bought a PEMF mat. Electromagnetic frequency is pulsed through the mat. They say that almost everyone can feel it. I had to try it in order to believe it. Don’t take my word for it, try it yourself. Give yourself 20-30 minutes to fully enjoy what it can do for you.
Music is powerful with moods. Bass is important. I love the Valhalla Calling songs on YouTube. The bass really grounds me and stops me when I am overthinking. Figure out what music works best for you and get yourself organized. Create a playlist for those mornings when you wake up ungrounded. Not a big deal, play the music, maybe it has the tuning forks at 528 hz, bass, babies laughing, kittens- whatever it is that floats your boat.
I have friends that feel grounded with crystals or with dancing. Those things get them in their body, fully in their body. When we are daydreaming or otherwise ungrounded, we tend to “leave our body.” Move away from meditation during those times and into physical activity of some sort to bring you back in.
One friend suggested stomping and jumping. I don’t pretend to understand the body as well as my friend, but there are some reasons from the field of biology that reinforce that jumping will help you regulate your mood and increase the odds of grounding. Stomping or beating your chest will do similar things and get you good results.
Chanting a grounding sound like “Om” or “Lam” helps people. Reminding themselves over and over, “I am here,” can work wonders. It is akin to a mantra that centers them and reminds them to be in their body instead of in their head.
Grounding could be as literal as getting a shovel and digging. In the winter, I often will grow plants from seeds. Getting my hands in the soil tricks me into thinking it is spring or even summer and I feel much more grounded. One guy was saying he might get a green house and go into it with his chair when it is sunny and take his shoes off and put his bare feet on the grass.
Steven Porges wrote about the Polyvagal nerve and has many exercises such as humming, breathing, tapping that stimulate this nerve which calms us down (grounds us).
In the OT world, they talk about the benefits of Deep pressure. SCUBA diving exerts pressure on the body at a certain depth that feels oh, so comforting to a lot of people. A massage with deep pressure, weighted blankets- try them out and see if they have that effect on you. These bodies don’t believe in one-size-fits-all.
Reiki is a healing technique that directly helps people with grounding. When the chakras are able to be opened and closed at will, you will find grounding less challenging- just another tool at your disposal. In Holy Fire Reiki TM, there are two symbols used- KRIYA and Rama- that are designed for grounding.
Drumming circles or solo drumming can profoundly ground people.
Any touch at all can help some people ground. Others are touch-averse, so please ask before you touch someone, thinking that you are helping them.
You have probably picked up the pattern that some things work well for some people most of the time, but not 100% of the time. Other things don’t seem to work well for them. Keep exploring and experimenting and find what works for you.
Just playing with kids or as a kid can do it for some people. Get back in your body. Remember how much you laughed, smiled and played when you were a kid? ahhh
Joy, bliss and ecstasy can ground some people. The pleasure of the body, sensual pleasure- a good meal, a caress, a huge, a candle with that scent, cologne/perfume
Coloring books have gotten in on it as well.
Talking to someone- anyone, can be helpful. They don’t even have to be a great listener to help you ground. Just the act of talking helps some.
In the trauma treatment world, body work, body awareness, awareness of breathing, these can all help ground the person in their body. They are rooted. One technique uses a technique called alternating bilateral stimulation, that is essentially rhythmically tapping the left and right legs with one’s hands, first one then another. The brain loves it.
EFT tapping (emotional freedom technique- type that into your video search and watch how many options you have) can ground most people. You might not want to do that in public, though, because, well… it looks a little silly when you are doing it. Great results…
Cold or heat as needed- If you are cold and you find yourself shivering or uncomfortable from it, heat can warm you up, relax you and help you ground. Cold can do that when you are overheated.
I heard about a therapy with magnets. I thought it was a bit far fetched and then found it helpful. I don’t understand it, but let’s be honest, there are many things I don’t understand and I still use.
The word grounding could be applied to the fidget spinner- it occupies the monkey mind, so that the person can better concentrate. Works for so many people…
Water is amazing at helping people calm down, find their center, plug in. It can be an ocean, lake or other body of water, a hot tub, taking a shower. Next time you are out of sorts, see if any of these water solutions help. Oh, and drink water, as well.
“Magical passes” by Carlos Castaneda- he wrote a book of exercises that have helped people ground down their energy.
Chi gong is another field of exercises that can help you move energy. Type in “Grounding Chi Gong” and see how many options are presented.
Grass and plants -laying on the ground, easier in the summer where I live, can be an amazing experience, even with a blanket or sleeping bag. I experimented with having my head face true north and believe it helps, as well.
Stretching your body, gets you focused on the body and can help you remove discomfort. Most of the time I am not grounded in my body, my body is upset with me. Discomfort in the body makes people leave their body and not be grounded.
In yoga, there are specific poses for grounding. All of it is mindfulness, movement and breathing- which ground us.
Hara is a concept from the Martial Arts. From a spot a couple inches below the navel, you connect to the center of the earth. The next is to then connect to the soul seat (around your heart “Your deepest longing”) and then from there to the heavens. Imagine surrendering your will to the the will of the divine or the universe? Making sure you are lined up with the earth and the heavens? You are definitely grounded then!
Some would question the use of the word grounding. Might be more purifying- Fireplace, fire, pit, bonfire
Journaling can get you out of your head or more into your head, depending on how you approach it.
Creating things and building things can ground people.
One dear friend suggested, “Go for a walk on a trail where no one is around. Take a lot of deep breaths. Keep walking until I feel lighter. Every once in a while, I stop, close my eyes, and listen to nature around me. Works for me every time.”
Another wrote, “Box breathing, self talk, reminding myself to read the room's energy.”
In conclusion, there are many ways to be successful when grounding. Try them all and see which ones you want to do again. We talked about getting more energy, by plugging in and staying in our body. We talked about getting rid of excess energy or energy that is not doing well, discharging it into the earth.
